What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome, also known as median nerve compression, is a nerve condition that can cause tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway on the palm side of the hand that is surrounded by nerves and ligaments. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure placed on the median nerve, a nerve running the length of your arm that controls movement and feeling in the thumb and fingers other than the little finger. The pressure can occur over time through repetitive motions such as typing or other repeated behavior, as well as conditions such as obesity, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel include:

  • Tingling or numbness in the hand or fingers that worsens over time
  • Electric shock sensation in the fingers or shooting from the wrist up the arm
  • Weakness in the hand and the thumb’s pinching muscles
  • Slower nerve impulses
  • Lesser coordination and strength in the hand

Is Carpal Tunnel Covered by California Workers’ Comp?

Every California employer with at least one employee must carry workers’ compensation insurance for the benefit of their employees. California workers’ comp insurance covers all manner of workplace injury and illness, both physical and psychological, whether caused by a single traumatic accident or arising over time. Carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress disorders / repetitive motion injuries are covered by workers’ comp so long as the worker can prove that the condition actually arose as a result of performing work-related tasks.

Proving that a repetitive stress injury or another injury that developed over time is work-related can be challenging and complex. Insurance providers are looking for any reason to limit benefits or deny a claim outright. They’ll try to point to other activities that may have contributed to or caused your carpal tunnel injury. A seasoned workers’ comp attorney at Ochoa & Calderón can help you build your case and maximize your benefits regardless of what the insurance companies try to claim.
